PCHS 2020 Year in Review
Become a member and help support our work.
As it was for everyone, 2020 was challenging for the Pawnee County Humane Society because of COVID. We had to make adjustments to our operations to ensure the safety of our staff and volunteers. The biggest change was closing the shelter to the public and operating by appointments only for people interested in looking at, and adopting, the animals. We also had to do without our inmate workers for seven weeks in late summer, but our volunteers and shelter manager worked together to ensure the animals were well cared for.

One bright spot in the year is that PCHS had more animals adopted out or returned to their owners than we had strays or surrenders coming into the shelter. Ninety-two cats and 136 dogs came into the shelter, for a total of 228, while 94 cats and 141 dogs, 235 altogether, went out. Out of that total six cats and 64 dogs were returned to their owners. At one point in the spring we only had four dogs total in our system. Three were at the prison and one lonely dog occupied the kennel room for about two weeks.

Some notable “guests” at the shelter included Jolene and her six six-month-old puppies who came from a bad hoarding situation and were poorly socialized. Jolene was very attached to her puppies so the separation adjustment was emotional to say the least. However, all seven of them were adopted and are doing well. Another bright spot was the adoption of two “old timer” cats, Scout and Amadeus, who had both been at the shelter for over a year, found their forever homes.

Although we say this every year, it’s important to acknowledge that none of our work could be done without the financial and volunteer help of our supporters. We also have to thank the city of Larned, the Kansas Department of Corrections, and the local vets, Doctors Burdett, Frick, and Mull. They all work together to ensure our animals stay healthy while they wait for their forever homes.

Our annual meeting will be Thursday, January 21 at 6:00 pm. Due to coronavirus, it will be held virtually on Zoom.  Everyone is invited to attend but only members will be able to vote for new board members. Use the form on this page if you'd like to become a member.

With your help, we look forward to another successful year of helping the lost, homeless, and neglected animals of Larned and Pawnee County.
