Adopting a Pet from PCHS

We try not to make the process too complicated.  Our goal is to match the right family with the right pet.  That's why we encourage home visits and like to give people and pets plenty of time to get to know each other before finalizing adoptions.  We want to make sure that when an animal goes to their forever home, that's exactly what it is.
We received the 2023 Kia Pet Adoption Grant from the Petfinder Foundation. The money is for reducing or eliminating adoption fees for animals who've been here over six months, as well as black cats and dogs (who have lower adoption rates), special needs and senior animals. You'll find the reduced adoption fee on the description page of any eligible animals.

All current pets must be up to date on their vaccines, and also current on heart worm medicine (dogs) and flea and tick preventative (both dogs and cats).  We'll confirm this with your veterinarian.

We prefer that current pets are spayed and/or neutered.  Not having your pets spayed or neutered may prevent you from being able to adopt.
Each animal has its own needs such as a fenced yard, ongoing medical cost, etc.  The new family must be able to meet the needs of the pet they are interested in.

When you adopt an animal from us, you'll be asked to sign an adoption receipt.  Since this is a binding contract between the adopters and PCHS, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with what's require of adoptive families once we finalize the adoption.

Kansas Adoption Laws state law requires that all animals adopted from shelters, rescues and pounds be spayed or neutered.  Most of the time the animal you choose will already have this procedure done.  If not (usually if they are too young when adopted) you'll be required to sign a Certificate of Sterilization.
We allow for a reasonable period of time once the animal reaches the age at which they can be sterilized for the procedure to be performed.  Failure to do so will result in PCHS reclaiming the animal (s) and possible criminal charges, fines, fees and court costs.

Application

You can send us your application in several different ways.

The quickest and easiest way to send your application is to fill out this online adoption application.  It will be automatically emailed to us when you're done.  Both Word and PDF versions are available for download.  These can either be emailed, hand delivered, or mailed.  You can also stop by the shelter and fill out an application in person.

We'll contact you as soon as possible with an answer after we get your application.  All applicants require a veterinarian check and the approval of either the shelter manager and two board members, or three board members.

If we get several applications for the same animal, we'll review each application and select the most appropriate home.
